Gavin was diagnosed with NF type 1 at six months old. We had no idea that my husband Gary had NF 1 as well and had passed it to our son genetically. We have been lucky so far in that Gavin doesn’t have many issues but early on he had learning delays, speech delays, and coordination/fine motor skill issues. We still have to be worried about what else may happen in the future and we are being as proactive as possible with doctors/specialists appointments throughout Gavin and Gary’s lives. We also have to worry about what would happen to any of our future children because NF is a genetic disease. We have decided not to have more children but this will also be another hard decision for Gavin when he decides to start a family of his own someday. Gavin is a happy loveable Ten year old boy who we couldn’t be prouder of. Our greatest hope is that NF will someday be cured and that no other children will have to worry about this horrible disease.
