My name is Jennifer Heraty. I am 39 years old and have NF. I did not know I had NF1 until after I joined the military in 1996. While stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, I found a lump on the back of my head near my spine. It was the doctor who removed the growth that told me I had NF1. I never heard of it before, once I did research I realized that, the pain I been having all my life was because of NF1. I was given the choice to get out of the Navy or stay in. Needless to say I completed 17 years in which I completed 4 deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan from 2003-2008. NF1 has not stopped me from doing my duty in the military. NF1 will not stop me from doing anything I set my mind and heart to. Just like the rest of the NF champions we will keep fighting no matter what until there is a cure.
