I was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis when I was about 14 years old. I remember the day as if were yesterday because the doctor looked and me and said; “Have you heard of the Elephant Man? You got that”. That moment was pretty terrifying for me because I had in fact seen it, but that moment was also a miracle because my parents didn’t take out the doctor for saying such a thing. Fortunately, I later learned that I was not going to turn into the Elephant Man and that Joseph Merrick did not have Neurofibromatosis. Since my diagnosis I have had testing, surgeries, and pain but I cannot even imagine what some of these children go through and I want to do anything I can to help ease their pain and find a cure for NF.
I have had my own ups and downs with NF and it took me a long time to learn how to not let it negatively affect me. Everyone has their scars, and I am so excited that I can try to use mine to fundraise for as an amazing of an organization as the Children’s Tumor Foundation.
